WordCup weekend: Brazil stunned, Argentina survive scare – Iberian clash tonight ⚽😱 NEW

World Cup update: the Round of 16 shows no mercy

A lot has happened since Thursday – and for many tippers it was a weekend to breathe easy. Or not.

Last Round-of-32 ties
Australia 1:1 Egypt – level after 90, Egypt advance on penalties. Tipped 1:1? Four points for the scoreline – nail penalties and Egypt as winner and you can bag all six. Argentina 1:1 Cape Verde (a.e.t. 3:2) – nearly the biggest World Cup shock ever! Messi put the holders ahead early, Cape Verde levelled twice – Duarte (59′), Cabral with a wonder strike in extra time (103′). Only an own goal by Borges off Romero's header (111′) rescued the reigning champions. Sovereign? Not even close. Tipped 1:1 after 90? Full marks for the draw – add extra time and Argentina as winner for the maximum six. Backed Argentina to win in 90? Tough day for the leaderboard. Colombia 1:0 Ghana – tight, but enough. Anyone who backed Colombia can smile today.

Round of 16: shockwaves
Canada 0:3 Morocco – the co-hosts and crowd favourites are out. After that fairytale opener in Los Angeles against South Africa, the Round of 16 was a step too far. Paraguay 0:1 France – Germany know how awkward Paraguay can be. France ease into the quarter-finals. Brazil 1:2 Norway – the absolute bombshell! Haaland & Co. dump the favourites. Most slips had Brazil winning – after 90 it read 1:2. Tipped 2:1 or 3:1? At least the consolation point for “full time after 90 minutes”. Mexico 2:3 England – out on home soil. The Three Lions are back – anyone who backed Mexico goes home empty-handed.
